Dr Elpida Georgiou is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in EMERGE at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics of Cyprus University of Technology. She completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering at Cyprus University of Technology in 2011. She then continued her studies in London and gained her Master’s Degree in Earthquake Engineering with Disaster Management from University College London (UCL) in 2012. In 2020, she obtained her PhD in the Seismic Retrofitting of RC Frames with RC Infilling from the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics of Cyprus University of Technology. The nonlinear numerical parametric study of the contribution of dowels connecting the wall to the bounding frame for the seismic strengthening of RC frames with RC infill walls was studied through nonlinear response-history analyses. Her research interests are concentrated on the assessment and retrofitting of existing structures, the numerical simulation of structures using numerical finite element analysis, the risk assessment of structures from hazards, and the disaster risk reduction.
She has worked as a Research Fellow for the Research Program ‘SERFIN’ in 2013 at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics of Cyprus University of Technology. She has also been entitled as an External Special Fellow of her Department to undertake the completion of a proposal under the Program ‘Horizon 2020’ in 2014 to 2017. In addition, she has worked for the “Nonlinear analysis of RC frames with RC infill walls” and for the “Modeling of the behavior of dowels within RC members” as an External Special Fellow from 2015 to 2020. Further, she has worked as a Special Research Fellow for the organization and execution of a summer Educational Program ‘Climate-KIC Journey’ in 2018 to 2020. Moreover, she has been entitled as a Special Research Fellow for the preparation of report for the ‘ARISTA’ Research Program regarding a proposal to IPE Programs at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics in 2018. Furthermore, she has been a Research Fellow at the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts within the framework of the European Research Program ‘Enginite’ in 2018-2019. Also, she has been a Research Fellow at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics for the European Research Program ‘Young Innovators Cyprus 2020’. She has also offered teaching assistance and lab support at her department for undergraduate courses and tutorial support at the Student Development Center during 2013 to 2020. She has worked for the vulnerability assessment of the existing buildings in Cyprus within the European Research Program ‘ISTOS’ and participated in Workshops and Short-Term Scientific Missions for Hazard Identification, Vulnerability Risk Assessment for Natural Hazards, Disaster Management and Impact Mitigation during 2020 to 2022.
She is a member of the Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK), the Society of Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics in London (SECED) and the Society of Civil Engineers of Cyprus (SPOLMIK).
